About Us
Chandernagore is an old town with its unique colonial legacy - it was a French colony till 1948. In such a town when some young men grouped together to form an association - Sangha - they could think of no other name than "SHAKTI SANGHA" - an association dedicated to garner POWER. The name of the association speaks volume of what the young men of a colonized town were aspiring for.

And they arranged their activities in such a manner that they could do justice to the name of their sangha.
They believed that true power is derived from a healthy mind nestled in a healthy body. So they started with a library which was initially housed in an abandoned cow shed. Today, after a tireless striving for eight decades by the members, the library now boasts of nearly 11000 books, copies of old newspapers, periodicals. The library caters to school going children too with a well stacked book bank.
Chandernagore Sakti Sangha at the time of birth
This is the spirit of the Sangha that it has been sticking to the principles it started with even after eighty years. That a mind derives its sustenance from books and looks for an expression was recognized by the early members. So they began organizing theatre performances, music competitions, and the practice is still being continued. Children's theatre, theatre workshops, full length play by the senior members of the club are essential parts of the year long activities of the Sangha.

Kabaddi Practice
An enriched mind resides in a strong body. SHAKTI SANGHA believes that true power - Shakti- comes from a combination of strong mind and strong body. So they started with kabadi tournament, a game of physical strength. In tune with the spirit of a colonized people who were desperate to achieve Power- 'Shakti' - the Sangha initiated fencing, stick fighting in its early years. And they immediately drew the colonial police's attention. The office bearers were often summoned by the French Police. They had the knowledge that the Sangha had sent monetary aid to the Azad Hind Fouz.
